How our Physiotherapy can Help
Following an assessment of your symptoms, and guided by your individual preferences, we will devise a treatment plan to give you the quickest and longest lasting relief. If one technique is inappropriate then another can be used and your condition may respond to different treatment techniques at different stages of recovery.
Physiotherapy
this is the analysis of joint and muscle movements and postural muscle imbalances. Treatment ranges from soft tissue massage and manipulation to self corrective exercises or much more. We can help you lengthen short muscles or strengthen weak muscles to correct any inappropriate forces being placed on the joints or spine which can lead to early joint degeneration and pain. Understanding the cause of the problem will help in its recovery.
Acupuncture
Involves the penetration of a small sterile acupuncture needle into the correct place or places to stimulate the immune system into responding to damaged or painful tissues. It does this by releasing natural painkillers (Endorphins) from the brain and by increasing the blood supply to the dysfunctioning area.
Endorphins are a form of morphine created naturally by your body but which may have stopped being produced if your injury has been prolongued.
The increased blood supply brings with it increased oxygen to supply the cells with the energy to recover and removes excessive waste products found in the painful areas such as lactic acid and the by-products of inflammation. It also brings in specific blood cells which can adapt to deal with the dysfunctional area and the building blocks of tissue repair such as collagen, elastin, etc.
The effects of acupuncture can also work on the nerves themselves, improving their conduction properties and thereby improving the health of all the tissues they supply.
In short, although it may not seem natural to insert needles into someone, acupuncture stimulates and increases your body's own natural healing process.
Ultrasound
Used to hasten the process of tissue healing after injury and to reduce pain and spasm in fatiged muscles (Trigger Points). Similar effects to acupuncture above but the effects are localised not global as ultrasound can only be applied to a small area at a time. Ultrasound is a very good soothing, pain relieving treatment when you are feeling too sensitive to be touched.
Spinal Manipulative Technique
The rapid thrust techniques which cause the joints to pop are commonly associated with the osteopathic profession but have been in use by the physiotherapy profession as well since the 1960's following the teachings of Dr James Cyriax. These techniques, predominently used on the spine, can free up the joints to allow them to move more fully and freely and, where the joints themselves are the cause of pain, can give fast pain relief.
By using with the combined doctrines of Physiotherapy, Acupuncture and Spinal Manipulative Technique here at Physio-World we can achieve an extremely high success rate in the treatment of all forms of back pain, whether in the lower or middle back or in the neck.
